Britney commits cartoon suicide

Britney Spears gets animated again, but this time it's not in one of her music videos. The troubled pop-starlette was featured in an episode of South Park which showed her shooting herself in the head leaving her 70% headless through the rest of the episode as she runs from the media. Reactions about the episode have been rampant claiming the writers took it "too far." But watching the episode you have to wonder what point these writers were trying to make about celebrity and the media? I don't think the point of this episode (which showed the detrimental effects the media has on Miss Spears) was to blast Britney, but to show us that the papparazzi and even us, as consumers of the media, are all to blame for her current mental crisis. Slowly but surely we are chipping away at a woman who mental state is shaky, to say the least. I think on the surface this episode can be seen as a cheap shot at Britney, but in reality I don't think it's the writers of this show who have taken it too far -- maybe it's us?

Maddy, I totally agree. I first saw the episode with all guys, who thought the episode was completely hilarious. I was the only one who didn't laugh at all during the entire episode, because I found quite a bit of truth in the message.

Perez introduced the episode on his Web site by proclaiming how South Park creators "skewered" Britney and what he failed to realize is that South Park creators were actually "skewering" people like HIM! The episode was really criticizing the paps and people like Perez who stop at nothing to get the gossip and expose all of Britney's mistakes and lapses in judgment

Although some of Britney's problems can be attributed to her own inner demons, it certainly doesn't help knowing that the public is literally watching your every move. It is quite a bit of pressure to put on someone who is already unstable.

Really, this episode showed how the public needs myths like the ones Jack Lule discussed in our class. Britney is the perfect example of a successful woman in a downward spiral, like a Marilyn Monroe or Anna Nicole Smith. Not only does the public feed off of this media hype, but they actually help create it.
